What is it Like to Attend Emerson College

What is it Like to Attend Emerson College Sarah is a current senior at Emerson College. She is majoring in media production, and specializes in creative writing tutoring, AP US Government tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, she shares her experience at Emerson College: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Sarah: Emerson College is located in the heart of Boston, across from the Boston Common. Theres no real campus; the city is our campus! In such an urban setting, its a little more important to be aware of your surroundings, but Ive always found it very safe. Theres also an amazing public transportation network available to students, with three subway stops very nearby and plenty of public buses. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Sarah:Professors are guaranteed to have office hours, and most are incredibly willing to meet with students outside of class. Advisers also have open office hours, and you can schedule meetings with them ahead of time as well. Theyre a great resource. Ive personally found my adviser and professors incredibly available. How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Sarah:Emerson has four different dorms, each with their own unique offerings. Most are fairly new, and have cozy suite-style living spaces. Freshmen and sophomores are guaranteed housing on campus, while juniors and seniors usually live in off-campus apartments. There are a variety of different dining options on campus. The food is standard college fare, meaning that its nothing fancy or incredibly delicious, but there is something for everyone. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Sarah:Emerson has a very small range of majors, as its a school dedicated exclusively to communications and the arts. The programs that they do have, though, are very strong. I am in the visual and media arts department, with a concentration in writing for film and television, and I think its a great program. The faculty are very talented and knowledgeable, with lots of impressive experience in the industry. Theres plenty of first-rate technology available to student filmmakers at the college. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Sarah:I found that it was pretty easy to meet people at Emerson after I got involved on campus. Most people here are incredibly invested in their extracurriculars, so if you participate in organizations that involve things youre passionate about, youll meet a lot of talented people with the same interests as you. Greek life is also pretty popular at Emerson, but not in the traditional sense; most fraternities and sororities are professional, not social, organizations. If youre interested in Greek life, its still a great way to meet like-minded people and gain professional skills and connections. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Sarah:The Emerson career center is super helpful. Theyre a great connection to jobs and internships, both for students and alumni, and theyre always willing to meet with students to look over resumes or help with career planning. In addition, many top companies, both in Boston and on Emersons Los Angeles campus, look specifically to recruit Emerson students, especially at the multiple job and internship fairs that Emerson holds every year. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Sarah:There are definitely enough study areas at the school for every student to find a spot, with plenty of labs and student lounges. The campus library is small in size, however, and closes at 11:00 p.m. or earlier most nights. The Boston Public Library is also only a short walk away and is an amazing facility that lots of Emerson students take advantage of as a study spot. Describe the surrounding town. Sarah:Boston is a fun college city, and its where most Emerson students spend their free time. There are plenty of awesome places to shop and eat, and the local music scene is great as well. Another good thing about Boston is the number of other colleges nearbythere are always new college students to meet and new places to go. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Sarah:My largest class so far only had about forty students, and most of my classes have had ten to twenty students. Ive gotten to know many of my professors and classmates really well, and even though my department is the largest in the school, I still feel that its very close-knit. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Sarah:Emerson is a liberal arts school with a strong oratorical tradition. As a result, all students are required to take a class in Speech Communication. At first, I was not excited about taking this class at all. I didnt feel it really pertained to my major, and I was pretty confident in my public speaking skills already. However, the class was so small and close-knit, that I ended up making many close friends, and I found that my speaking skills actually improved dramatically. Check out Sarahs tutoring profile. Guitar Basics Why is Technique Important

Guitar Basics Why is Technique Important Suzy S. New to the guitar? Getting the basics down including proper positioning and guitar technique is important from the very start. Here, Lowell, IN teacher Blake C.  explains   Over the years, many experienced guitarists have arrived at my studio doorstep asking for help to improve their playing. These guitarists didn’t understand why they were struggling, and merely thought they were stuck in some sort of a slump. However, the slump that these guitarists suffered was not caused by a lack of musical desire or passion or some other emotional hang-up; poor guitar technique led to their difficulties. Correcting poor technique is often more difficult than learning proper technique as a beginner. Of course, students can learn guitar basics first, but even the basics are difficult without proper technique. Therefore, it’s a better idea to avoid developing poor guitar technique; instead, study proper guitar technique with a quality instructor who can assist you with learning guitar the right way the first time. How Do I Know If I Am Using Incorrect Technique? The simplest way is to set-up an in-person or  online video lesson to have your technique reviewed by a professional instructor here at Takelessons.com. If you absolutely cannot take advantage of an instructional session with a Takelessons  instructor, below are a few ideas to improve your current technique and  guitar playing. How Do I Identify Guitar Technique Flaws? Video recording is a good option, but an even better alternative is a bit lower-tech and used at most music conservatories. First, locate or purchase a dressing mirror â€" these can be purchased for $9 or $10 at most local dollar or general merchandise stores. Next, locate or purchase a footstool â€" these can be purchased for approximately $12. Finally, locate or purchase a good practice chair â€" adjustable piano benches are available for about $30. Set Up Your Practice Area   To begin, the footstool is for your left foot if you play guitar right-handed.   For left-handed guitarists, use the footstool for your right foot.   Next, place the mirror directly across from you, setting it up so you can see your hands. Once the mirror is in place, get into a proper sitting position for practicing guitar. Sit toward the front of the bench â€" this will help your posture. Keep in mind, after you have a good handle on using proper technique, your sitting position will not be as critical for performing simple guitar parts or songs. However, when you perform more difficult pieces, youll need to be in a proper sitting position. Many guitarists will sit for difficult pieces: Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and of course, classical guitarists such as John Williams are usually seated when playing difficult guitar pieces. Next, if you are a right-handed guitarist, place the guitar on your left leg. Left-handed guitarists, place your guitar on your right leg. After the guitar is in place, angle the guitar neck slightly upward, approximately 45 degrees (everyone is different and the angle must suit your body size and shape). Next, try playing a few musical phrases to check the comfort level of the position. Adjust the guitar angle to the natural and relaxed position of your hand, which typically angles slightly upward. This placement of your guitar is for electric and acoustic guitars.   Positioning the guitar in this manner provides the least strain on your hands and body. Here is an example of proper guitar position demonstrated by one of my young students: Now that you are in position, let’s begin by focusing on the position of your left hand. First, you should press with the ball of your thumb on the center of the guitar neck. Your thumb position will change for different styles, pieces of music, and even sections of songs. However, to begin this adventure into correcting guitar technique, press from the ball of your thumb onto the center of the back of the guitar neck. With your thumb in position, extend your fingers forward and take a look at your left hand in the mirror â€" it should create a flat surface that is almost parallel to the plane created by the bottom of the guitar neck. Now, to prepare for a simple, yet very good left-hand exercise, move your hand position to the fifth fret and place your first finger on the “C” note on the fifth fret of the third string. Keep your first finger depressed while you place your second finger on the sixth fret of the third string, which is a “Db” note. Next, keep both your first and second fingers depressed while you place your fourth finger on the eighth fret of the third string, which is an “Eb” note. Make sure that you press with your fingertips and don’t collapse your joints. Notice how the second finger in the image above incorrectly collapses. You will intentionally collapse the joints of your fingers in many instances, but try to avoid it. Next, well dive into some exercises to try check out part two of the article here! Creating Home Behavior Charts that Actually Work!

Creating Home Behavior Charts that Actually Work! If you have a child with ADHD, then chances are youve tried using a behavior chart with him or her at home. They are one of the first tools parents turn to when their child has difficulty following through on everyday tasks or needs extra support to manage behavior. Behavior charts are a key tool in evidence-based interventions for ADHD at home and at school. Yet despite the evidence, many parents say that when theyve tried behavior charts in the past they havent worked for their child. If research shows that behavior charts are effective, then why does it seem like so many kids with ADHD dont respond to them? Usually its because the charts werent designed with ADHD in mind. Kids with ADHD need systems in place that specifically help them overcome their difficulties with motivation, organization, and completing complex tasks. As a result, special attention needs to be given to the types of behavior goals that are included in behavior charts and the way that rewards are selected and provided when a child achieves his or her goals. The good news is that by following a few key guidelines, you can create behavior charts that will work for your child! Behavior Chart Guidelines Write clear and positive behavior goals. Your chart should communicate to your child exactly what it is that he or she needs to do to achieve his or her goals. Always write the goals in a way that tells your child what to do rather than what not to do. For example, Sit down at the table and start your homework at 4:15, is a much more effective goal than, Dont put off doing your homework when you come home from school. The first goal sets your child up for success by telling him or her what to do and when to do it. Focus on behaviors that happen consistently and routinely. The most successful behavior charts are those that focus on routine behaviors things that occur at roughly the same time and in the same order every day. Why? Because these behaviors can be easily tracked, expectations around how and when they should be completed are clear, and they can eventually turn into habits that dont require a behavior chart at all. Morning routines, evening routines, homework routines, and even mealtime routines are great targets for behavior charts. Behaviors that occur randomly outside of these routine times, like whining or arguing with siblings, are less appropriate targets and are less likely to improve with a behavior chart. Choose other strategies for these non-routine behaviors. Break complex tasks down into smaller goals. Very often I see behavior charts that include goals like Finish Homework or Get Ready for School on Time. As an adult we may look at these goals and think they are perfectly reasonable. After all, they describe exactly what you want your child to do! The problem is that for kids with ADHD, each of these goals actually represents a complex series of smaller tasks. So, if you list Get Ready for School on Time on your childs behavior chart, there is a good chance that you will find your child forgetting to do at least two or three important things in the morning, and if he or she is ready for school on time it will only be because you provided multiple reminders or completed some of the tasks for him or her. To set your child up for success, break complex tasks down into the smaller steps that need to be completed each day and post the list in a place where it is visible to your child. A typical Get Ready for School on Time goal for a child w ith ADHD should be listed as 4 or 5 separate behavior goals representing each of the activities included in his or her typical morning routine. Choose goals that are within your childs reach. Create behavior goals that you think your child could achieve at least 80% of the time. Goals should aim to stretch your child from the point he or she is at right now, while still being within your childs reach. This might mean that you focus on intermediate behavior goals that are a step in the right direction, rather than the ultimate end goals that you want your child to achieve. For example, if you want your child to wake up on his or her own with an alarm clock, but he or she has never (or rarely) done this successfully in the past, then this behavior may be out of reach right now. A more appropriate goal would be to have your child get out of bed after you wake them up and provide just one reminder. When your child has mastered this goal, you can drop the reminder. Once your child is out of bed consistently right after you wake him or her up, then you can adjust the goal further and expect him or her to wake up independently when the alarm clock goes off in the morning. Include no more than 5 behavior goals on the chart. Most kids can handle only 5 behavior goals on a single chart. This can be challenging for parents, especially when there are so many areas where youd like to see your child improve. Start by focusing on the highest priority behaviors first. You can add new goals once your child has mastered the initial list. While its best to start out with a single behavior chart, you can eventually create different charts for different times of the day. For example, your child can have a morning routine chart and a homework chart. This helps keep any single list from becoming too overwhelming. Provide consistent and frequent rewards that your child finds motivating. In behavior charts, rewards are just as important as behavior goals especially for kids with ADHD who often struggle with motivation. It is important to provide rewards daily, since kids with ADHD struggle to maintain motivation when rewards are delayed (although some kids ages 10 and up can handle larger delayed rewards). In general, the more immediate the reward the better. Rewards also need to be provided consistently when your child meets his or her goal, and rewards should never be given when they have not been earned. Always involve your child in creating a list of possible rewards ahead of time. This will ensure that the reward options include things that your child truly finds motivating. Since kids interests change so often, you should check in with your child frequently to make sure he or she is still interested in the rewards they are working to earn. There are many reasons why a behavior chart may not have worked in the past, but that doesnt mean that a behavior chart will never be a success with your child. In fact, I have yet to work with a child who has ADHD and did not respond to a well-designed behavior chart! Its all about following a few key principles of behavior chart design and adjusting the chart over time to match your childs unique needs. ABOUT DR. How Nestas Click Connect Learn fund helped the Foundation successfully pilot Tutorfair On-Demand

How Nesta's Click Connect Learn fund helped the Foundation successfully pilot Tutorfair On-Demand The Tutorfair Foundation has been working with Nesta since September 2017, when we were selected for a grant as part of their 'Click Connect Learn’ fund. The fund was set up in collaboration with The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to support innovations that use digital technology to enable volunteers to tutor disadvantaged pupils. Nesta’s support enabled us to build and pilot Tutorfair On-Demand  â€" a completely free to use text-and-image-based instant messaging platform that connects students with volunteer tutors instantly through their devices. Now, the platform is connecting us with schools in the North-West and West Midlands as well as giving us a far greater reach across London and the South-East. Our volunteers also have a much more flexible way to get involved with Foundation activities if they have busy schedules or aren’t living in London. With the final report from Click Connect Learn due to be published at the end of October, we received the following testimonial from Jed Cinnamon, the Programme Manager in the Education Team at Nesta who has worked with us right through the grant cycle to help deliver the project: ‘We backed Tutorfair On-Demand through the Click Connect Learn fund,’ says Jed, ‘because Nesta are excited about the potential to raise educational attainment for students who can be hard to reach with face-to-face volunteering.’ '[The Foundation’s] aim is to reduce inequality in education by providing eligible students with free tuition in GCSE Maths through instant messaging to their own devices. The pilot began with 4 schools at the start of the 2017/18 academic year, but the platform has since grown to support 34 schools.’ ‘Tutorfair achieved all the important objectives of the project, including the technical build to plan, on budget, and on time.   They were able to work around some major challenges, including a proposed partner going out of business and a key person finding a new opportunity during the project.’ ‘The Tutorfair On-Demand app is accessible to students when they want and need help, which makes the platform unique. The flexibility of volunteering on the platform is appealing to volunteers; and there is huge potential that the app will be able to prove its impact on attainment once it reaches large enough scale.’ ‘During the project, Tutorfair produced clear, detailed and punctual reports. They focused on understanding, in detail, what was working and what was not working on the platform using qualitative and quantitative data and collecting valuable feedback from tutors, students and teachers.’ ‘The Tutorfair team are professional, collaborative and cooperative, and they participated fully in sharing learnings with other grantees and projects at our events. Nesta are happy to recommend Tutorfair Foundation as a grantee to develop and manage worthwhile educational technology and tuition initiatives.’ Tutorfair On-Demand will be reopened for 2019-20 academic year in early November. If you’re a leader at a school where the student population is greater than 50% Pupil Premium eligible, you can register your interest here. If you’re interested in volunteering on the platform, let us know here  and if you’d like to help us with our fundraising, contact the team at foundation@tutorfair.com to get involved.
